Padise Klooseter was a former monastery in Padise, Harju country. It was built in 1310 out of the former Padise stronghold, which had been around since the 7th – 8th century. The monastery however was burnt down along with 28 monks during the St. George’s uprising just 33 years after it had been partly built. Few centuries later, after the monks had started using and then abandoned the monastery, it was converted into a fortress. Later on, as fortresses lost their importance, it became a country house and the ruins of it run a museum nowadays.

The ruins have been restaurated several times, latest on 2001. Western and southern side are still in ruins. It is opened as a musuem, free of charge, and can offer a truly medieval feeling when you find yourself walking around the large halls and coridors of the slightly ghostly monastery. The only remainings of the medieval interior is a over 600 year old church bell, which is currently at a nearby Risti church.

Going to the Abbey during the dark will, if lights are turned down of course, offer a slightly ghastly and haunting experience for sure, at least for those who believe that we would not be the only living things in the premises. It also has a small tower where you can go and have a brief overview of the surroundings.

Currently you can visit the museum for free, or order a guided tour in advance, though currently the guided tours are only available in Estonian language. http://www.padiseklooster.ee/kontakt.html
